Our Mission
The Zena Rommett Dance Foundation, LTD. was founded in 1968 to preserve, promote and provide training in the Zena Rommett Floor-Barre Technique® for current and future generations of dancers, athletes and the general public.

The Zena Rommett Floor-Barre Technique® is a gentle and highly effective method for correcting and refining body alignment, building muscular strength and length, and increasing vitality and artistic expression.

Zena teaches an intermediate/advanced Floor-Barre® & Ballet class at 10:00 am Tuesday and Thursday at Steps (2121 Broadway at 74 Street, New York City).  Students should come prepared with tights, leotard and ballet shoes. No sweat clothes, please.

Zena Rommett, Artistic Director and originator of the Zena Rommett Floor-Barre® and Ballet Technique®has been teaching in New York City and internationally for over forty years, attracting dancers, figure skaters, gymnasts and athletes from all over the world. The Zena Rommett Floor-Barre ® Technique incorporates innovative dance movements with anatomical principals of alignment in a pure technique of solid placement. Without the pull of gravity, correct alignment and movement become part of the dancer's muscular memory. The physical structure is centered, lengthened and strengthened; tension is released while maximum turnout and extension are developed. A pioneer in dance rehabilitation and injury prevention, Zena's technique has assisted thousands of dancers to overcome serious injuries and prolong their dancing. careers.

Zena Rommett was born in Northern Italy and entered America through Ellis Island at the age of five.  Zena had a natural gift, a dancer's body, and a strong disciplined will. Encouraged to cultivate her inborn talents in New York, she was offered a scholarship to study with George Balanchine and studied with other Russian masters including Antelo Vilzak, Madame Schillar, Madam Anderson and Chester Hale. Zena toured Europe as the sole female member in an adagio trio known for its perilous lifts and precise timing. She danced with the USO in Austria, Germany and France ,and danced in her credits include Seven Lively Arts with Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin, and Broadway musicals such as Song of Norway and Paint Your Wagon.

In 1965, American dance legend Robert Joffrey invited Zena Rommett to teach at the American Ballet Center. Three years later, Ms Rommett opened her own school in New York City and has been a sage to thousands of professional dancers over the decades. She has been a guest teacher in schools and companies in the USSR, Italy, Germany, Asia, and across the United States.   In the process of teaching her unique method, Zena has acquired a long list of devotees that reads like a virtual "Who's Who" of contemporary and classical dance. Floor-Barre® enthusiasts are among many prominent names in theater, athletics, professional skating and rehabilitative and physical therapy.

AND THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY

In June, 2002, The 44th World Congress Committee held in Taipei, Taiwan presented the Zena Rommett Floor-Barre & Ballet Technique® with certified Floor-Barre® teacher Professor Lyn Elam of Austin University.  WCOC is dedicated to the pursuit of wellness in the new millennium and featured speakers on health, physical education, recreation, sports, and dance.

In October 2002, the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science invited Zena to give a lecture/demonstration on Floor-Barre® technique.  Dr. David Weiss, IADMS President, said to Zena: “You are so famous we want you to lecture twice”.  IADMS was created to serve as a forum for education, promotion of research, and public service in the field of dance medicine and science.
Pointe Magazine’s founder, Virginia Johnson, invited Zena to speak at the August 2002 Annual Teacher’s Conference to discuss the rehabilitative benefits of
